The Pintail Driveway

Overview

Scott Flanagan Landscape | Paver Driveway Installation | Illinois

When the homeowners at Pintail came to us, they had a single-car concrete apron and a largely unremarkable front approach that simply didn’t reflect the quality of their beautiful brick home.

They wanted something that would make a statement from the street, hold up to the harsh Illinois freeze-thaw cycles, and complement the landscaping they envisioned for their front yard. What we delivered was a complete transformation that turned their driveway into the defining feature of their curb appeal.

Design & Material Selection

We chose a large-format concrete paver in a warm blend of buff, tan, and charcoal tones — a color palette chosen specifically to complement the earthy, variegated brick of the home’s exterior.

The pavers were installed in a classic herringbone pattern across the main field of the driveway, which provides both visual interest and exceptional structural stability underfoot and under vehicle loads. A soldier course border in a contrasting color was used to frame the perimeter, giving the driveway a clean, finished edge that anchors the design and draws the eye.

Scope of Work

The project began with full excavation of the existing driveway surface and sub-base down to a depth appropriate for Illinois frost conditions, typically 8 to 12 inches. We installed a compacted aggregate base layer to ensure proper drainage and long-term structural integrity, as a well-built base is ultimately what separates a paver installation that lasts decades from one that shifts and settles within a few years. A layer of bedding sand was then screeded to a precise grade before paver installation began.

The driveway itself was designed with a generous apron width that fans out as it approaches the street, creating an elegant, welcoming entry. The layout incorporates a graceful curved transition at the street edge — a detail visible in the aerial photography — that softens what could have been a hard, boxy edge and instead gives the driveway a sense of movement and flow.

Landscaping Integration

One of the most important aspects of this project was how we integrated the hardscape with the landscape beds.

Rather than treating the driveway as an isolated element, we designed sweeping curved planting beds along the left side of the driveway and across the front of the home. These beds were edged in a way that mirrors the curves of the driveway itself, creating a cohesive design language throughout the front yard. The beds were planted with a mix of flowering perennials, ornamental groundcovers, and shrubs that provide multi-season color and texture — visible in the aerial shot with vibrant blooms of pink, purple, and white framing the lush green lawn.

A straight concrete sidewalk path runs from the driveway to the front entry, providing a clean, practical walkway while allowing the organic curves of the beds to do the visual heavy lifting on either side.

The Finished Result

Standing back from the street, the transformation is dramatic. What was once a plain and forgettable entry is now a polished, cohesive front presentation. The warm paver tones echo the brick, the border detailing adds architectural refinement, and the curving planting beds bring life and softness to what could have been a hard, utilitarian space. The aerial photo tells the whole story — the property looks intentional, well-designed, and cared for from every angle.

For the homeowners, this project delivered exactly what they were looking for: lasting beauty, everyday function, and the kind of curb appeal that makes coming home feel like arriving somewhere special.
